The BMW X5 has an unusual advantage among imports: it is one of the few premium German SUVs that is actually built in the United States.
Model profile
The X5 launched as the E53 (1999–2006), BMW's first SUV — or SAV, in their language. The E70 (2007–2013) grew larger and introduced the third-row option and the twin-turbo N63 V8. The F15 (2014–2018) refined the formula and added the xDrive40e plug-in hybrid. The current G05 (2019–present) offers mild-hybrid straight-sixes, the potent X5 M, and the xDrive45e plug-in.
Powertrain and equipment
US X5s span a broad engine range. Straight-sixes include the N52, the turbocharged N55 and the current B58. V8 buyers chose the 4.4-litre twin-turbo N63 (and S63 in the X5 M), good for 445 hp and well beyond in M form.
The X5 is a five-seat SUV with an optional third row on many generations, making it a genuine seven-seater in a pinch. US trims ran through xDrive35i, xDrive40i, xDrive50i, xDrive35d, the plug-in hybrids and the X5 M.

Availability is excellent nationwide. Southern and western states offer rust-free cars that suit a German winter; be more cautious with Northeast examples. Typical import candidates sit between 40,000 and 100,000 miles. Because the X5 was a popular lease vehicle, many have documented dealer history and were well maintained.

Pre-purchase review
The X5's reputation rests heavily on which engine you buy. The N63 V8 is powerful but has a well-known history of oil consumption, timing-chain and valve-stem-seal issues, and battery drain; BMW ran a Customer Care Package for early cars, so ask what has been addressed. N55 sixes can suffer water-pump, oil-filter-housing gasket and VANOS issues.
Germany and Europe
US X5s use amber side markers, US-pattern headlights, an mph speedometer and no rear fog lamp, all of which the TÜV will require changing or coding.
Expect to convert or code the headlights, add a rear fog lamp, fit European indicators, and confirm the speedometer shows km/h.
