BMW X4

Importing a used BMW X4 from the USA

The BMW X4 is a coupe-profile SUV that BMW builds at its Spartanburg plant in South Carolina — the same site that supplies X models to the world. That US origin makes the X4 an especially interesting import candidate, because a used American example can, with the right VIN and plant proof, qualify for the EU's 0% preferential import duty. USCar Trader works as your independent broker for used X4s: we help you find, verify, ship and register a car, without acting as a dealer and without adding a vehicle margin. The US market is deep, well-optioned and often keenly priced on used premium SUVs, which is why importing an X4 from the USA is a genuinely practical alternative to the German used market.

Production years and key changes

The X4 launched for 2015 as the first-generation F26, a coupe-roofline counterpart to the X3. The second-generation G02 arrived for the 2019 model year on BMW's CLAR platform, growing slightly, shedding weight, and sharpening both the styling and the chassis. A comprehensive facelift (LCI) followed for 2022 with revised lighting, a larger central display and updated iDrive. Throughout, the X4 has been positioned as the style-led, more dynamic sibling to the X3, and the US has been one of its core markets — which means used supply is strong across trims and model years.

What is under the hood

US X4s centre on two petrol engines. The xDrive30i uses BMW's 2.0-litre B48 turbo four, producing around 248 hp, while the M40i steps up to the 3.0-litre B58 turbo straight-six with roughly 355–382 hp depending on year. Both drive through BMW's ZF eight-speed automatic and standard xDrive all-wheel drive. At the top sits the full X4 M (F98), with the S58 twin-turbo six making around 473 hp, or 503 hp in Competition form. The US did not receive diesel X4s in meaningful numbers, so import buyers should expect a petrol car — which suits German buyers who want the smooth, torquey B58 six that has become something of a modern classic.

Trims and body styles

The X4 is offered only as a five-door coupe-SUV, so the choice is trim and engine. Common US configurations include xDrive30i, M40i, and the M Sport package that most cars carry. Options worth confirming on a used example include the Premium and Executive packages, the Harman Kardon audio, adaptive M suspension, the panoramic roof, head-up display, and the larger wheel options. The M40i and X4 M add adaptive dampers, upgraded brakes and a sportier exhaust.

What the US market offers

X4 supply in the US is healthy, spanning 2015–2018 F26 cars and the more desirable 2019-onward G02s, including facelifted 2022+ examples. Typical mileage runs from around 25,000 miles on recent M40i cars to well over 90,000 on early xDrive30i models. Sun Belt cars (California, Arizona, Texas, Florida) tend to be corrosion-free, which is where an experienced broker will focus. As with any used premium SUV, service history, accident record and evidence of proper maintenance on the turbo engines matter more than the headline mileage.

Who this import is for

A used X4 import suits a buyer who wants a distinctive, dynamic premium SUV — particularly the straight-six M40i or the X4 M — and appreciates the value and specification depth of the US market. It is less suited to someone who prioritises maximum rear headroom or load practicality, where the conventional X3 is the better tool. If the coupe silhouette, the B58 six and a well-specified American car appeal, the X4 is a strong import candidate, helped by its US build origin.

Reliability: trouble spots to check

The X4 is broadly dependable, but there are known items to inspect. The B48 four and B58 six are strong engines, though both can develop oil leaks over time (valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets) and benefit from strict oil-change discipline; carbon build-up is less of a concern on these than on some earlier BMW direct-injection units, but still worth checking on high-mileage cars. The eight-speed ZF automatic is durable but appreciates a fluid service despite BMW's long intervals. Cooling-system components, the electric water pump and, on higher-mileage cars, suspension bushings and the parking-brake actuator are typical wear points. On M40i and X4 M cars, confirm brake and tyre condition and that adaptive dampers work correctly. Electronics and iDrive are generally solid; check that all driver-assist features are present and functional.

US vs. Europe differences

US-market X4s run mph-primary clusters, US lighting and DRL settings, and North American navigation and radio bands. Equipment bundling differs from Europe — some US packages combine features that were standalone options here. Emissions calibration is to US standards, but as a petrol BMW built in the US the X4 converts cleanly for German approval. The rear fog lamp and headlight compliance are the main lighting items your workshop will address for TUEV.

How the import works

The sequence is: shortlist suitable X4s from US listings; run a VIN and origin check (the Spartanburg plant code is key to any 0% duty claim); use escrow rather than a direct wire; arrange inland transport to the export port and ocean freight to Bremerhaven, Hamburg or Rotterdam; clear German customs; complete a TUEV individual approval with any required modifications; then register and plate the car. USCar Trader manages these stages on your behalf as your broker.

Import duty, VAT and fees

Bottom line: what matters is the factory shown by the VIN – proven US origin unlocks 0% duty. The 19% import VAT always applies.

Two separate charges apply. The import duty: under Regulations (EU) 2026/1455 and 2026/1461, the 0% preferential rate applies only to passenger cars of provable US origin shipped directly, in effect from 1 July 2026 to 31 December 2029. The X4 is built in Spartanburg, so a US-built car can qualify for 0% — but only where the VIN and plant confirm US origin; it is verified, not assumed. Separately and always, the 19% German import VAT (Einfuhrumsatzsteuer) is charged on the customs value regardless of origin. USCar Trader adds no vehicle margin — you pay the seller, freight, any statutory duty and the VAT.

From modifications to registration

Typical approval work includes fitting a rear fog lamp, adapting or replacing headlights to meet EU photometric requirements, confirming a km/h speed readout, and verifying tyre and emissions compliance. The individual approval (Einzelabnahme) documents the car for the Zulassungsstelle, after which you obtain the registration and plates. BMW's own data usually simplifies the paperwork given the model's presence in Europe.

Pre-buy inspection points

Confirm these before buying: the VIN matches the title and confirms the Spartanburg build (important for any 0% duty claim); a Carfax or AutoCheck shows no salvage, flood or odometer issue; the underbody is free of structural rust, particularly on salt-belt cars; the service record shows regular oil changes and any recall work; the engine is free of significant oil leaks and the ZF gearbox shifts cleanly; the title is clean rather than salvage or rebuilt; and on M40i/X4 M cars the brakes, tyres and adaptive suspension are healthy.

What buyers ask most

Can a US-built X4 get 0% import duty?

Yes, potentially. The X4 is built in Spartanburg, South Carolina, so a car with VIN/plant proof of US origin can qualify for the 0% preferential rate. It must be verified per vehicle and is never guaranteed.

Does the 19% import VAT still apply?

Yes, always. The German Einfuhrumsatzsteuer of 19% is levied on the customs value of every used import regardless of origin.

Which engine should I look for?

The M40i's B58 straight-six is the enthusiast favourite for its smoothness and performance; the xDrive30i four is the efficient, more affordable choice.

Is the X4 reliable?

Generally yes, provided oil changes are respected and gasket leaks and cooling components are monitored on higher-mileage cars.

Are US X4s left-hand drive?

Yes, all US X4s are left-hand drive.

Did the US get diesel X4s?

Not in meaningful numbers. Expect a petrol car when importing from the USA.

How long does the import take?

Typically several weeks from purchase to registration, depending on freight schedules and TUEV availability.

Do you buy the car for me?

No. USCar Trader is an independent broker; you buy the vehicle and we handle sourcing, verification, shipping and registration.
