Model profile
The first-generation X2 (chassis code F39) arrived for the 2018 model year and was sold in the US through roughly 2023. It shared its UKL2 architecture with the F48 X1 and the MINI Countryman, which is why it drives more like a tall hot hatch than a traditional BMW SUV.
Powertrain and equipment
US F39 cars centred on the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. The xDrive28i used the B46 unit at around 228 hp paired with an 8-speed Aisin torque-converter automatic, driving all four wheels through a Haldex-type clutch pack.

Overall the X2 is a mechanically conventional BMW four-cylinder and holds up well when serviced on schedule. The recurring themes owners report are typical of modern turbocharged direct-injection engines: carbon build-up on the intake valves over higher mileage, occasional oil leaks from the valve cover and oil filter housing gaskets, and coolant seepage from plastic fittings.
Germany and Europe
US cars run amber front side-marker lamps, US-tuned daytime running lights and typically miles-based instruments (the digital cluster can usually be switched to km/h and, on many BMWs, to km via coding).
The common changes for German approval are lighting-related: headlamps set to the correct beam pattern, a working rear fog lamp, and side markers dealt with as required.
