The X1 is BMW's entry into the SUV range: a compact premium crossover that packages a turbocharged four-cylinder, all-wheel drive and a genuinely useful cabin into a footprint that suits city and Autobahn alike.
Model profile
Three generations matter. The first, E84 (US sales 2013-2015), was the enthusiast's X1: a longitudinal-engine, rear-drive-based platform shared with the 3 Series, offered in the US as the rear-drive sDrive28i and the AWD xDrive28i and xDrive35i. The second generation, F48 (2016-2022), switched to BMW's transverse UKL front-drive architecture, growing rear space and cargo room while every US car was the xDrive28i.
Powertrain and equipment
US X1s are four-cylinder turbo cars, with one six-cylinder exception. The E84 xDrive28i used the 2.0-litre N20 turbo (241 hp); the rare E84 xDrive35i ran the 3.0-litre N55 turbo inline-six (300 hp) with a seven-speed dual-clutch.
The X1 is a five-door compact SUV only. US equipment is organised around packages rather than named trims: Premium, Convenience, M Sport (F48/U11) and driver-assistance bundles. Look for panoramic roof, heated seats, adaptive LED headlights, head-up display and the larger infotainment where fitted.

The X1 sells in large numbers in the US, so used supply is broad, from three-year lease returns to older E84s.
The X1 suits a buyer who wants a compact premium SUV with a proper AWD system and does not need three rows or heavy towing.

Pre-purchase review
For the BMW X1, the agreed inspection plan focuses in particular on vehicle history, visible body and underbody condition, fluid leaks, warning messages, tyres, brakes and accessible suspension components. US X1s use amber-integrated front indicators, a rear cluster without a separate rear fog lamp, and mph instruments.
Expect to add a rear fog lamp, adapt or replace headlights to the ECE pattern, and document the odometer conversion from miles.
