Model profile
The first-generation M2 (F87, 2016-2021) launched with the N55 single-turbo straight-six, then evolved into the M2 Competition (2019 onward) with the S55 twin-turbo engine shared with the M3 and M4, and culminated in the track-focused M2 CS. The second-generation M2 (G87, from 2023) moved to the S58 twin-turbo six and the CLAR platform, growing in size, power and technology.
Powertrain and equipment
The early F87 used the N55 3.0-litre single-turbo straight-six, around 365-370 hp. The M2 Competition switched to the S55 3.0-litre twin-turbo, about 405 hp, with the M2 CS raising that to roughly 444 hp. The G87 uses the S58 3.0-litre twin-turbo, around 453-473 hp depending on year.
The M2 is a two-door coupe only. The meaningful distinctions are between the base F87, the F87 Competition, the F87 CS, and the G87.
Vehicle selection
Supply is healthy in enthusiast-heavy states such as California, Texas, Florida and the Carolinas. The M2's character means many cars have seen spirited road use and some have seen track days, so condition varies widely. A well-kept, stock, adult-owned M2 with full BMW service history is the goal; a heavily modified or track-abused car is the one to avoid unless the history is transparent.

M2 reliability is generally strong for a performance car, but each engine has known talking points. The N55 in the base F87 can suffer a wastegate rattle and some oil consumption with age, and the DCT benefits from regular fluid service.
