Importing Muscle Cars - It Doesn't Always Have to Be a Mustang

Importing Muscle Cars - It Doesn't Always Have to Be a Mustang

An American muscle car is an invaluable dream for many, yet beyond the well-known sports cars, there are also other classics that possess no less charm and power. And they show a bit more individuality.

Import Your Muscle Car - There Are Plenty of Alternatives

Muscle cars like the Ford Mustang, Shelby AC Cobra, Dodge Charger, or Chevrolet Camaro are well-known and in high demand, which accordingly drives up their prices. However, beyond the stars of the scene, there are several classics that receive little attention. Often unjustly so. Technically just as competent and also interesting in design, they are particularly rare on German roads. Such lesser-known vehicles often attract more attention than the "mass-produced" ones. Below, we introduce you to 11 interesting alternatives.

AMC AMX

AMC? Yes, this manufacturer also produced the infamous Gremlin. However, the AMX has little in common with it. It was often compared to the Corvette because of its relatively short wheelbase and powerful engines. Today, not only its design and power make it an interesting alternative. Its price-performance ratio is also reasonable. Despite having less power compared to some, its lighter weight allowed it to compete with much larger and more powerful rivals.

AMC Javelin

A direct competitor to the Ford Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro is the AMC Javelin. An interesting detail: The second generation's AMX variant was the first pony car to be used by law enforcement agencies. Already in the first generation, the car shone with several innovations in the field of safety. Engines ranged from 3.8 to 6.6 liters displacement, producing 110 to 340 horsepower. It was built from 1967 to 1974.

AMC Rambler-Marlin

The AMC Rambler Marlin also deserves a second look. Rare yet affordable, this two-door fastback was only produced for two years, making it even more of a rarity in Europe than in its home country. As an exotic, it attracts many looks here. The engines range from 3.8 to 5.4 liters, delivering power from 155 to 277 horsepower. Unlike many other muscle cars of that time, the Rambler Marlin was luxuriously equipped and finished with high-quality materials.

Buick Gran Sport

Buick Gran Sport

Buick also played in the muscle car league. Starting in 1965, the Buick Gran Sport 400 was offered with its 6.6-liter V8 engine producing 330 horsepower. In 1967, a completely newly developed engine with 345 horsepower was introduced. In 1969, the Buick was modified. Stage 1 now reached 350 horsepower, and the rare Stage 2 variant officially produced 365 horsepower. Measurements showed that the actual power was much higher. In 1970, the GS400 was replaced by the GS455, now using a 7.5-liter engine with 350 horsepower, and from 1972 as Stage 1, it also had 375 horsepower. A slightly less powerful sister model (Gran Sport 340/350) with a 5.6-liter V8 was produced starting in 1967. (Image author: Greg Gjerdingen)

Chevrolet Chevelle SS

The Chevelle was built from 1964 to 1977. The sporty versions, which are considered muscle cars, were offered from 1966. Initially, they were equipped with a 6.5-liter V8 engine, which delivered up to 380 horsepower to the road. Later, the Super Sport received a 7.4-liter engine producing more than 270 horsepower. (Image author: nakhon100)

Ford Torino

A highlight from Ford and also very popular in the USA is the Ford Torino. The sporty Torino Cobras, offered in some model years, hold particular collector value. This mid-sized car, built in several body styles, features engines ranging from 5.8 to 7.5 liters, producing 154 to 205 horsepower. The Torino impresses not with the most powerful engine performances. However, it definitely represents the muscle car class with its design, and due to its relatively good equipment and rarity, it's an interesting vehicle with potential for value appreciation. (Image author: Sicnag)

Mercury Cougar

Also significantly cheaper than its established competitors is the Mercury Cougar. It was produced from 1967 to 1970 as a so-called "Pony Car" with engines ranging from 4.7 to 7.0 liters. With the second generation from 1970 to 1973, it grew to over five meters in length. The sports cars, exclusively equipped with V8 engines, deliver between 202 and 380 horsepower. Mercury is a brand of the Ford Motor Company. The Cougar is technically similar in many respects to the Ford Mustang. It is considered the better-equipped version of the cult classic. (Image author Greg Gjerdingen)

Mercury Cyclone

The sister model to the Ford Mustang was introduced in 1964 and offered until 1971. Equipped with V8 engines ranging from 4.9 to 7.0 liters, they produce 213 to 390 horsepower. A particular highlight was the limited Cyclone Spoiler version offered from 1970 to 1971. It featured a locking differential on the rear axle, spoilers at the front and rear, and a special decorative stripe.

Plymouth Road Runner

Strong and in the typical style of the muscle cars of the 1960s and 1970s, the Road Runner makes its appearance. An almost endless hood and an elongated trunk dominate the silhouette. Also typical are the spartan equipment and the rather cheap-looking materials used in the interior. Nonetheless, it's a serious contender among American vintage sports cars. It was built between 1967 and 1980 with engines from 6.3 to 7.2 liters, producing between 340 and 431 horsepower. The peak of engine performance was reached in 1971. Due to insurance companies' refusal to insure these vehicles, the power slowly decreased. The Plymouth Road Runner Superbird reached a speed of 322 km/h (200 miles) in 1971, becoming the first muscle car to do so.

Plymouth Sport Fury

Little known is that the Plymouth Fury, in its Sport version, is also considered one of the early muscle cars. Built between 1964 and 1973, the car has a 7.0-liter V8 with 370 and 380 horsepower. It was available in several body styles and was Chrysler Corporation's response to the 1963 Pontiac GTO.

Pontiac LeMans GTO

The first generation of the GTO is relatively expensive. Vehicles from Series 2, from 1968 to 1972, are somewhat more affordable and offer comparable performance to Mustangs and the like. Visually, it also stands out and pleasantly differs from the sea of most muscle cars. The high-displacement V8s range from 6.6 to 7.5 liters, with 253 to 375 horsepower, making the GTO similar in strength to its competitors. Motor Trend magazine named the GTO the Car of the Year in 1968.

Underrated Stars - Individuality for Everyone!

Of course, this list is not exhaustive. The US and Canadian markets offer far more beauties with style and plenty of power. Maybe it doesn't have to be the classic muscle car. In America's earlier decades, large and powerful engines, typical for the American lifestyle, were also implanted in station wagons, vans, and pickups. Surely you will find your dream car with the characteristic V8 sound in our vehicle market. USCar-Trader.com not only offers you the search for your jewel, but we also take care of a safe purchase, the import including all formalities, and the conversion. Conversion and TÜV Approval for Imported Vehicles

Conversion and TÜV Approval for Imported Vehicles

Converting and obtaining TÜV (Technical Inspection Association) approval for vehicles, especially from the USA, Canada, and other third countries, is an essential step to register these vehicles in Germany. Our experts at various locations in Germany specialize in this process, ensuring a smooth transition.

Conversion and TÜV approval of imported vehicles

Technical Conversion and TÜV Approval for Imported Vehicles

Importing a vehicle from overseas often requires technical modifications to meet German and European standards. This is especially true for vehicles from the USA, Canada, and other third countries.

Why is a conversion necessary?

Each country has its technical and safety-related specifications for vehicles. To register an imported vehicle in Germany, modifications often need to be made concerning lighting, emission and noise standards, and safety regulations. The process of technical adaptation and verification concerning registration guidelines is referred to as conversion or homologation.

Our Service for Your Conversion and TÜV Approval

Our experts handle the conversion and TÜV approval at various locations in Germany. Thanks to our extensive experience in vehicle import and the corresponding expertise, we can offer you an efficient and professional service.

Benefits of our service:

  • Technical adaptation and TÜV approval at multiple locations in Germany.
  • Comprehensive expertise of our staff and partners.
  • A conversion and TÜV approval in Germany by us also offers the advantage of a potential day registration. This provides you with German vehicle documents, which significantly simplifies registration in other EU countries.

Additional Information on Conversion

For the TÜV approval to obtain the §21 full acceptance, the presentation of the title, vehicle data sheet, photometric report, and emission behavior report is required.

TÜV SÜD provides additional information on the requirements and the conversion process on their website.

Required documents for conversion and TÜV approval:

  • US Title/MSO or Ownership (for imports from Canada)
  • Vehicle data sheet
  • Photometric report
  • Report on emission behavior

Apart from the US Title/MSO or Ownership, which is provided by the customer or is already available to us in case of an import by us, we take care of the additionally required documents during the conversion.

Technical Condition as a Key Factor in TÜV Approval

A significant factor influencing the conversion of imported vehicles is the vehicle's overall condition. It's essential to emphasize that the costs for the conversion and the associated adjustments heavily depend on the imported vehicle's technical condition.

Vehicles being converted for the German market must not only meet specific requirements for imported vehicles but also the general technical standards applicable to all vehicles. This means that an imported vehicle, regardless of its origin, must be in perfect technical condition to pass the TÜV approval.

If defects are detected during the inspection, such as faulty brakes, worn tires, or other components that do not meet the Road Traffic Regulations, these parts must be replaced or repaired before the vehicle receives approval. This can incur additional costs that go beyond the standard conversion costs.

It is therefore advisable to conduct a thorough technical inspection before importing a vehicle or ensure that the vehicle is already in a condition that meets German standards. This can not only save time and money but also ensure that the conversion process runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible.

Final Steps for Registration

After successful conversion and TÜV approval, the vehicle's registration is next. Of course, we also support you in this step and are at your side with advice and action.

For registration, you will need the following documents:

  • Report for obtaining the §21 full acceptance
  • US Title/MSO or Ownership
  • Purchase invoice or Bill of Sale
  • Tax assessment or ZUB for moving goods
  • Registration certificate for moving goods

If you have any further questions or uncertainties, we are always available by email or phone.

American Cars vs. German Cars

American Cars vs. German Cars

Some American vehicle brands have a good reputation in Germany and Europe. They differ significantly from their European competitors and offer a genuine alternative due to their distinctive qualities.

German Cars vs. American Cars

The Distinctive Features of American Cars

Boldly styled, large, and equipped with big, powerful engines - that's how US cars are universally known. The development of the automobile in the USA and Canada took a completely different direction than in Europe. There might have been attempts here and there to follow the American way, but these were mostly met with a shake of the head from European customers.

American Excess vs. European Sensibility?

From a European perspective, this could certainly be described this way. But is it really that simple? What exactly defines a classic American car? And what about the typical European counterpart? Tastes, as we know, are different. They have often developed over the course of history and are as deeply ingrained in the population as the national dish. It sounds like a cliché, but it's easily traceable across generations of car history.

Americans tend to prefer cars that are:

asian SUV

  • Spacious
  • Visually striking
  • Powerfully motorized
  • Luxurious

However, they place less value on material quality and details in the manufacturing process.

European vehicles are primarily known for their:

american SUV

  • Compact size
  • Relatively spartan/practical equipment
  • Lovingly detailed workmanship
  • More economical engines

Some vehicle classes were only created through American development. For instance, the Chrysler Voyager can be considered the "original van" or "first minivan". Through it, small transporters were transformed into modern, well-equipped MPVs suitable for families. Today, it's known as the Chrysler Pacifica and has many imitators worldwide.

SUVs are also a distinctly American type of vehicle. Off-road vehicles have of course been available worldwide for a long time. However, it was the Americans who recognized the potential and transformed them into lifestyle vehicles. One of the first vehicles of this kind was the Cadillac Escalade. It impressed a wide range of customers from bankers to gangster rappers. Besides offering a glamorous appearance, these lifestyle trucks provide sheer size and powerful V8 engines.

Naturally, the latter require much more gasoline than a small four-cylinder Passat. The reason is different pricing structures. In the past, gasoline in the USA was relatively cheap. Consumption often played a minor role. However, things have changed significantly in recent years. Just like in Europe, gas prices have increased, and a rethink has begun. New and stricter environmental regulations from American authorities also contribute to the strategy change in American car manufacturers. The result: the typical V8 engine is becoming increasingly rare, even on the American market.

Did Europe Miss the Train? American-Made Electric Cars

For a long time, Europe stuck to combustion engines. Only a few of the well-known manufacturers seriously pushed the development of alternative drives. Timid attempts with manageable ranges and rather narrow performance were offered as revolutions at high prices. China and America show that it can be done differently. Some start-ups like Lucid and Rivian offer interesting alternatives to the electric Europeans. Particularly in the luxury class, real competitors can be found. Lucid already offers ranges of almost 900 kilometers.

electric vehicle - Tesla

But also, traditional manufacturers have recognized the signs of the times. For example, Ford offers the F-150 Lightning, a highly innovative pick-up. Depending on the battery pack, it offers ranges of over 380 to over 510 kilometers, making it a vehicle that is anything but shy. Coupled with the usual luxurious equipment and high power of the drives. In typical American fashion, it is not trimmed for economy, but mainly for performance. Even the resurrected Hummer after 10 years is a trailblazer in the luxury off-road vehicle class. The brute power of over 1,000 HP and yet a range of over 500 kilometers must first be surpassed.

European or American Sports Cars?

Opinions differ here. On paper, Porsche, Ferrari, Corvette, and Mustang are barely distinguishable. Yet an American car offers a completely different driving experience than the European competition. While European sports car manufacturers develop sophisticated technology, design extremely light vehicles, and install technically elaborate chassis technology, sheer power seems to be the focus on the American continent.

Both have their own unique charm, both find their fans and drivers in their own way, and both record their successes in the relevant sports competitions. The difference is not only found in the technology and performance. The design is often very distinctive, almost typically American.

German Cars in America?

Yes, German car manufacturers enjoy a good reputation in America. They have often adapted to the local market and offer models there that are not available here. For example, a larger version of the Passat was offered until 2021. The VW Atlas is completely unknown in Europe and is sold overseas in the full-size SUV class with 7 seats.

Many of these vehicles are relatively inexpensive. Even after adding import costs, the buyer often gets a very affordable vehicle. A good comparison here is the VW Taos. Also only available on the American market, it is actually a more modern, stronger, and better-equipped VW Tiguan. Currently, importing a Taos can save you about 10,000 euros.

US Imports for Everyone?

Admittedly, importing a US car is not for everyone. However, it is an alternative for many people who have not thought of it before. Whether it's a large road cruiser with a V8 engine, a high-powered muscle car, a full-size pickup, a van, or a sensible electric car, the American market has a lot to offer. Often, comparable European vehicles are much more expensive than the American dream car, even when including shipping and conversion costs as well as customs duties and taxes.

Just take a look at our database! There you will find Europe's largest selection of new and used cars as well as classic cars in North America and Canada. Of course, we also take care of safely bringing your new treasure across the big pond. We are also happy to take care of the conversion for registration here for you.

The Chrysler Pacifica is more than just a minivan. This luxurious, affordable vehicle has everything families need: space, comfort, and an optional hybrid drive. Popular in North America, it presents a tempting alternative to European vans. Discover the vehicle that's redefining family travel.

2022 Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid family van

Import North America's family favorite - The Chrysler Pacifica

Since 2016, the Chrysler Pacifica has been manufactured as the successor to the Chrysler Town & Country. In Europe, it was also known as the Chrysler Voyager and Grand Voyager. The 8-seater van is based on a new platform and weighs less than its predecessor. In addition, this luxury liner for families is available for the first time as a plug-in hybrid. Like its predecessor, the Pacifica offers a generous amount of space, making a family vacation trip a pleasure. Reliable technology, good equipment, and many practical details make it a particularly family-friendly companion, which impresses with its good value for money and is a serious alternative to European vans.

Pros

  • Generous space

  • Comfortable equipment

  • Hybrid drive

Cons

  • Relatively high-priced

  • Gasoline engine not very economical

  • Limited payload

Technical details of the Chrysler Pacifica

The family van in its base version comes with a 3.6-liter six-cylinder engine. The power is 291 HP, and the torque is specified at 355 Nm. Enough power to move the alternative 8-seater smoothly. However, it's not a sports car. The second variant offered is the 3.6 Hybrid. It has the same engine as the base model but has been somewhat reduced in power. It offers 264 HP, and the torque reaches 310 Nm.

Chrysler Pacifica - where the driver is working

The drive is standard via the front wheels. In the 3.6 gasoline engine, the power transmission is taken over by a 9-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available as an option from 2021.

The hybrid has a stepless EVT transmission (Electric Continuously Variable Transmission). Two electric motors with a total of 148 kW are installed and, together with the 16 kWh large lithium batteries, allow an electric range of 51 kilometers.

With a length of 5.18 meters, a width of 2.04 meters, and a height of 1.78 meters, the family car already plays in the league of European minibuses. The trunk allows about 915 liters of luggage with full seating. Folding down the rear seats creates up to 3,979 liters of cargo volume. The payload is somewhat meager at only 600 kilograms. The permissible trailer load is 1,600 kilograms.

Design – Chrysler Pacifica

The Chrysler Pacifica presents itself as a classic, but also modernly designed family van. Large sliding doors ensure comfortable entry in the rear seating rows and also make somewhat narrower parking spaces usable. The LED lighting is modernly designed and casts a good light.

Chrysler Pacifica with huge doors

The equipment also impresses with thoughtful details and a modern ambiance. An elaborate leather interior awaits buyers of the higher equipment lines.

The safety equipment also leaves little to be desired. Numerous assistants make driving not only more pleasant but also safer. A reversing camera is a given. Of course, a complete airbag system is also on board. Especially with a family vehicle, the safety of all passengers is important. In the Euro NCAP crash test, the Chrysler Pacifica scored an excellent five out of five stars.

In North America, the Chrysler Pacifica is one of the most popular family cars. Are you interested? Look at our offers for your Pacifica

The typical 7-seaters from Europe are well-known: Citroën Berlingo, Opel Zafira, or VW Multivan are popular choices in the region. However, there are great alternatives from America. USCar-Trader.com, Europe's largest online marketplace for vehicles from the USA and Canada, presents interesting options.

Extraordinary 7-Seater Family Cars from Overseas - Discover New Choices

The American automotive market is one of the largest globally, offering a diverse selection of models. Here, you can find vehicles that are not available in Europe. In some cases, even re-importing European models can be financially attractive. In addition to the minivans, vans, and SUVs known in Germany, the American market also offers many exciting family cars. Compared to the 7-seaters available in Germany, overseas vehicles often boast significantly more space, powerful engines, and generous features. Plus, they are less commonly found in Germany—a perfect alternative for individualists. Good examples include SUVs like:

We take a closer look at the models in our article 7-seater car: a comparison of the best alternatives from the USA.

A Brief History

Volkswagen has been working with a modular system since 2012, which has become the industry standard for the automotive industry in recent years. The so-called "Modular Transverse Matrix" (MQB) originates in the USA. There, many different bodies were already being placed on a single technical basis in the 1920s. This allowed manufacturers like Dodge, Cadillac, and others to offer new vehicles at relatively short intervals. Various models could also simultaneously be based on a single platform, keeping costs low. For example, Chevrolet offered 19 different models in 1957, which were technically identical. It was like having technology off the shelf while the body was tailored. This allowed design departments the best opportunities to be creative. Customers, in turn, enjoyed affordable prices and a wide selection.

A widespread cliché is that US cars are large vehicles with simple technology. While this may have been true in earlier years, increasing demands on drivetrain technology, emissions, consumption, and safety have emerged in the USA.

In terms of equipment, the New World was ahead. While European car buyers in the late 1930s were lucky to have heating, air conditioning was already being installed in America. Pioneers in 1938 were Nash and Studebaker, who made cooling possible for $4,000. The first standard air conditioning systems were introduced in the early 1950s. In Germany, however, air conditioning was not offered for retrofitting until 1960—initially for the VW Beetle and later for other vehicles. Many additional features that make driving easier and/or more comfortable were first offered in US cars.

Why Alternative 7-Seaters?

As mentioned earlier, the demands for size, engine power, and equipment in the USA and Canada are somewhat different from those in Europe. Naturally, the design of most vehicles available in America is anything but boring. Fans of the American lifestyle will find the optimal compromise between form, versatility, and family suitability.

American Engine Technology

Typical American large engines are known for their durability and great sound. Particularly, the big V8 engines continue to enjoy great popularity. Automatic transmissions are predominantly used. Engines and transmissions are usually operated far below their performance limits, which ensures high mileage and reliability. Fuel consumption is also moderate during typical American cruising. Vehicles only become truly thirsty when significant power is demanded. But let's be honest, who wants to race in such a car? However, even in America, the signs of the times have been recognized, and more fuel-efficient engines have been developed. Like in Europe, large engines are on the decline. Nevertheless, they are still larger in volume compared to European models. V-6 engines have become widely accepted and rarely have a displacement of less than 3.5 liters. Massive V8 engines still have a high market share.

The relatively high vehicle weight, combined with the high engine power and predominantly large torque, provides high towing capacity. While most European vehicles in this class have a permissible trailer load of 2 to 2.5 tons, American vehicles can often tow trailers of more than 4 tons.

The trend in Europe is increasingly towards smaller engines, from which more and more power is demanded. This certainly reduces fuel consumption. However, this comes at the cost of increased wear and tear. More complex engines are being developed, which are prone to failure, expensive, and cumbersome to repair. But even these smaller yet powerful engines can be found in the United States.

Electric mobility is also on the rise in the States. In addition to Tesla, two other manufacturers dominate the American market and score points with their long ranges. Lucid claims that its luxury cruiser, the Lucid Air, can cover more than 800 kilometers (about 500 miles) on a single battery charge. Its acceleration from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour (about 62 miles per hour) in 2.5 seconds leaves many Porsche drivers pale with envy. Rivian offers the R1S, a three-row electric SUV with 7 seats. Depending on the battery package, ranges between 420 and 510 kilometers (about 261 to 317 miles) are achievable.

Outlook for the Future

In the future, change will also come to America. As in Europe, discussions are taking place about changes in relation to climate change. Stricter emission regulations (similar to those in Europe) are being considered, as well as the introduction of a quota for electric mobility. By 2032, a maximum of one-third of vehicles are to be equipped with an internal combustion engine.

Design from Another World

From the early years of automobile manufacturing, American vehicles were characterized by a distinct design. Everyone is familiar with the classics from Cadillac, Buick, Chevrolet, and Dodge. Gigantic tail fins, hoods as large as ping pong tables, and excessive chrome trimmings were hallmarks of the cruisers of yesteryear. Even today, the shapes and sheer size of US cars stand out from the crowd. Admittedly, such spectacular design language as in the fifties to seventies of the last century no longer exists. Since 2001, bulky and angular shapes have been predominant, perhaps an expression of the nation's willingness to defend after an attack that struck deep into the hearts of many Americans. The vehicles still undoubtedly attract attention, and the size is not only evident in their appearance. The interior of these alternatives to European cars promises ample space and flexible usability.

In general, two body styles have established themselves among the 7-seaters: vans, some of which have additional seating options and can be extended to 8 or 9 seats, and SUVs. If off-road conditions are not expected, vans usually offer more space, better road handling, and lower consumption. Off paved roads, the SUV with its all-wheel drive, higher ground clearance, and greater towing capacity is the better companion.

Non-US car manufacturers have also gained a foothold in the American market and offer vehicles specially developed for the local market. For example, Volkswagen with its 7-seater VW Atlas. The SUV not only offers more space than the Tiguan, also from VW, but also all-wheel drive.
Another interesting alternative comes from Japan with the Toyota Sequoia. Built since 2000, it offers up to 8 seats as the second-largest SUV of the manufacturer. With the new generation from 2022, a hybrid drive is also used, which enables a system output of 437 hp.

The Toyota Sienna was specifically designed for the North American market. The front-wheel drive van has up to 8 seats and is popular among New York taxi drivers.

Safety of 7-seater US Cars

In the early years, the US car industry focused less on safety. Hard steering wheels and dashboards as well as missing airbags were the norm. Robust technology, powerful engines, size, and design took precedence. This has changed over the years. Stricter regulations and an increasing safety needs of customers led to a comprehensive change in strategy. Nowadays, most US cars have extensive safety equipment. Modern 7-seaters are equipped with comprehensive airbag and restraint systems as well as many useful assistants.

Differences when buying a new car: How it's done in the USA

Differences when buying a new car: How it's done in the USA

In Germany when purchasing a new car, buyers can customize their vehicle using a configurator according to their preferences. Although this is also possible in America, there are some differences. USCar-Trader.com explains how to buy a new car in the USA.

Vehicle equipment in the USA

Almost every driver has used the configurator on car manufacturers' websites to design a new car according to their preferences and ultimately display the total price for their dream vehicle. Whether Volkswagen, Mercedes, or BMW: Almost all manufacturers offer the service to choose from different drives, paint finishes, or special features in Germany.

This is also possible when buying a new car in the USA; however, configurators in the States have several differences. After choosing a vehicle model on the manufacturer's website, such as the VW Atlas, you can select various equipment lines already equipped with corresponding special features and extras. This means: customizing the features is only possible to a limited extent!

For example, if customers choose the base model, in the case of the VW Atlas, the SE variant, they get a vehicle with 18-inch alloy wheels, a digital speedometer display (8 inches), and an emergency brake assist. Heated seats and a blind-spot assistant are already standard. The VW Atlas offers a total of five versions, which, with an increasing base price, offer an increased number of features, such as larger alloy wheels, automatic climate control, or additional assistance systems.

Hardly any individual wishes possible

In the next step, car buyers choose the engine, with a fixed drive usually assigned to each vehicle model. This means that the cheapest standard model often cannot be combined with the most powerful engine. Instead, only smaller adjustments are available, such as drive type (front, rear, or all-wheel drive) or transmission. Those who want a high-performance model cannot be satisfied with the standard equipment.

Subsequently, interested parties can choose the paint finish and a color for the interior. Finally, only minor details are left. Car buyers can choose wheels, for example, and order additional equipment (roof rack, bicycle rack, etc.). However, it is not possible to make in-depth changes to the vehicle. In contrast to the German market, where new cars can be customized down to the smallest detail according to individual requirements, car buyers in the USA must be satisfied with standard variants.

A solution in Germany as well?

Is this concept conceivable in Germany? Yes! The individual configuration of vehicles poses significant challenges for car manufacturers, and customers must expect considerable waiting times, especially in the current situation. The configurators of some car manufacturers, such as Tesla, have already been reduced to a minimum, comparable to the American system. Volkswagen's configurator has also been adapted to the US system for some time.

Most configurators on the websites of German car manufacturers are too complex, posing challenges for inexperienced car buyers. It is not without reason that more than 80 percent of all interested parties want personal contact in the car dealership. Only one in ten new cars is bought online. Online shopping for car purchases? Less likely in the future! This could also lead to car manufacturers further simplifying the configurator on their website in the future.

Buying Classic Cars: What do car buyers need to know?

Buying Classic Cars: What do car buyers need to know?

Who doesn't dream of driving a classic American vintage car? In the United States and Canada, there is a wide range of attractive models that you can import to Germany or any other EU country together with USCar-Trader.com. However, when buying a vintage car, you should be aware of some important things. We will clarify and help you avoid mistakes.

Ford Fairline

Finding a vintage car can be challenging when car buyers desire a specific vehicle with high rarity value or simply want to fulfill a dream. Often, it is worth looking abroad to buy the desired vintage car. Here, you can find interesting vehicles like the Mercedes SL R129, which should still be considered a young classic. However, there are some things to consider when importing, especially if the car is purchased outside the EU, such as in the USA.

Don't forget the important paperwork!

To be allowed to import the vintage car to Germany and to avoid any problems during registration later on, you should not miss the required documents and papers. These include not only the purchase contract but also all vehicle documents that should be available as proof of ownership from the seller when purchasing. Although a title (comparable to the German registration certificate Part 2) is not necessary for older vehicles in some states, it should be clarified in advance whether the available documents are sufficient for both export and later registration in Germany, Austria, or any other EU country.

For vehicle registration, you will need the original vehicle registration document, the purchase contract, and a full inspection according to § 21 StVZO. The latter is necessary because imported vehicles from third countries generally do not have a general operating permit in Germany.

In addition, a customs receipt, i.e., an import duty notice or a customs clearance certificate, must be submitted to prove that the import duties have been paid.

Customs declaration is necessary

If a vehicle is imported from a non-EU country, which is the case when the vintage car is purchased in the USA or Canada, registration with customs is essential. Customs clearance can be done directly at the border crossing into the EU.

From a customs perspective, imported goods only need to be cleared once in the EU. A German import duty notice is admissible in every EU country as proof and for registration.

Commercial importers who are not resident in the EU country where the vintage car crosses the border into the EU also have the option of fiscal customs clearance. This allows for import without any import duties under presentation of a valid VAT ID number. Proof of the vehicle's transfer to the final receiving country is necessary and should be available to the customs authorities upon request.

However, any importer is free to use a T1 transit document to transport the vehicle to any other country for customs clearance.

Classics from the USA and Canada with discounted import duties

As a "collectible" with discounted import duties

Germany is one of the most attractive countries when it comes to import duties for vintage cars. For vehicles at least 30 years old, customs duties are waived, and a reduced import tax rate of only 7% applies.

The so-called "Customs Tariff 9705" is anchored in Chapter 97 of the EU's Combined Nomenclature. It states that a vintage car must be at least 30 years old and in its original, unaltered condition to be considered a collectible. Furthermore, the respective vehicle model must no longer be in production, which is almost always the case with a minimum age of 30 years. Exceptions apply, for example, to racing cars with a special history.

IMPORTANT: There is no guarantee that the reduced tax rate will actually apply, as the final decision lies with the responsible main customs office. Kit cars with a chassis from e.g. 1965, including the corresponding title, are no longer recognized as vintage cars.

For young classics that have not yet reached the full 30 years, the import duty is 10% of the vehicle value plus the applicable shipping costs. In addition, car buyers must pay the import sales tax, which is usually 19%.

Oddity from Switzerland: If the vintage car is in poor or restoration-worthy condition, the customs clearance will use the vehicle's value after restoration as the basis for assessment, not the purchase price.

If there is no current value, there is even the possibility that customs will initiate a value inquiry at a later date to determine the customs fees retrospectively.

Containers in the harbor

Additional costs: Don't calculate too tightly

When buying a vintage car and having it shipped from abroad to Germany, you should expect additional costs. Apart from age-related problems that may cause additional expenses during the TÜV inspection, vintage cars are generally a cost-intensive hobby.

Speaking of costs: In addition to the applicable customs duties, car buyers should not forget the other expenses. Not only transport costs make the vintage car purchase more expensive when importing, but there may also be costs for the disposal of non-importable refrigerants (R12) or a possible CPA (X-ray of the import container) or a conventional customs inspection. It is advisable to inquire about possible fees in advance. USCar-Trader.com is happy to help.

Buying a vintage car: What should you consider?

When buying a vintage car, especially abroad, you should know the relevant basics. This prevents unnecessary trouble, especially since buying a vintage car often involves an increased risk. It is important to know that the law of the country where the purchase contract was concluded always applies. If hidden defects appear later, it is usually difficult to hold the seller liable.

It is therefore advisable to ask in advance if the vintage car may be examined by an independent expert. If the seller refuses this request, caution is advised. Ideally, payment should be made through an escrow service when interested parties buy a vintage car. This offers the greatest possible security. A down payment of up to $1,000 is not uncommon. This ensures the seller that there is actual interest in the car and no intermediary sale occurs. Nevertheless, car buyers should pay attention to appropriate protection.

Conclusion: Buying vintage cars in the USA/Canada!

Buying a vintage car in North America (USA/Canada) may seem complicated and time-consuming. However, with some experience and expert support, it is worth buying a vintage car abroad. USCar-Trader.com will accompany you and make importing vehicles from the USA and Canada especially easy. From vehicle checks, purchase processing, and escrow services to shipping to Germany, we will take care of all necessary tasks for you.

Ford F-150 Lightning: Electrified Bestseller

Ford F-150 Lightning: Electrified Bestseller

For decades, Ford's F-150 has topped the sales charts in the U.S. This pickup is as emblematic of the traditional American image as hamburgers, baseball, and country music—or high-displacement V8 engines. So, it came as a surprise to many when, in 2019, Ford announced an all-electric version of this best-seller. But even more surprising was the enthusiasm the F-150 Lightning, unveiled in May 2021, sparked among consumers. By December, Ford had already received over 200,000 orders. Deliveries started in May 2022. Let's take a closer look.

Ford F-150: 40 million vehicles sold in nearly 75 years

The long-standing success story of the Ford F-Series began in 1948 when the Detroit-based automaker introduced the first generation of this versatile model. From the get-go, only 6- and 8-cylinder engines powered these trucks—a fact that remained constant through 14 model generations until the debut of the F-150 Lightning. Since 1983, diesels have been available alongside gasoline engines. To date, more than 40 million units of the Ford F-Series have been sold. Since 1977, Ford has dominated the pickup segment in the U.S. with this model. And since 1981, it has been the best-selling vehicle in the U.S. every single year.

Mission: Making EVs mainstream

To ensure the enduring leadership of this pickup icon in an evolving market, Ford made a proactive move in 2019 by announcing its electric variant. They didn't want to leave the electric segment uncontested to challenger Tesla. Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, announced the Tesla Cybertruck that same year, but its production start date has been postponed multiple times. Presently, experts anticipate its market debut no earlier than late 2023. While the futuristic-designed Cybertruck may not target traditional pickup buyers in the American Midwest, Ford aims precisely for this demographic with the F-150 Lightning—intending to make electric vehicles popular with the masses.

Acceleration akin to a sports car

To achieve this, Ford isn't skimping on power. There are two motor options: The base model delivers 452 horsepower, while the top variant boasts 580 horsepower, accelerating the three-ton pickup to 100 km/h in a staggering 4.5 seconds. Both variants are equipped with dual motors. With 1050 Nm of torque, the F-150 Lightning outshines all its combustion-engined counterparts. Its maximum towing capacity is around 4.5 tons.

Over 500 kilometers of range

But raw power and impressive acceleration alone won't sway staunch petrol enthusiasts. Here, Ford seeks to impress with a commendable range and efficient charging capabilities: The base model, equipped with a 98 kWh battery, offers a nominal range of 370 kilometers. It can recharge from 15% to 80% in just 44 minutes at a fast-charging station. The top model, with its 130 kWh battery, takes 41 minutes for the same charge and offers a maximum range of 512 kilometers. Both models use 400-volt technology and can charge at up to 150 kW. As a unique feature, Ford highlights that the F-150 Lightning can power a home for up to three days during an outage.

The Ford F-150 Lightning: A familiar sight

Visually, this electric pickup barely differs from its conventionally-powered Ford siblings—probably a strategy to not alienate traditional buyers at first glance. The F-150 Lightning measures 5.91 meters in length, 2 meters in height, and a broad 2.44 meters wide, including extended side mirrors. The four-door aluminum body rests on a steel frame. With a wheelbase of 3.70 meters, the five-seater offers ample interior space. The controls in the Lariat and Platinum trim levels are operated through a 15.5-inch vertical display in the center console or by voice command. Where the combustion engines would typically be, the F-150 Lightning has a 400-liter storage space.

Competitive starting price

Price remains a significant purchasing factor—and it seems to resonate with consumers, as the numerous pre-orders attest. The base version starts just under $40,000, with the top variant available from close to $91,000.
